Famous Cities of the World: Jerusalem

Jerusalem is dominant, represented as a circular walled city overlooked by the Mount of Olives, with Bethlehem nearby on the right. Egypt and Gaza are in the lower right corner; the port of Jaffa is at the bottom center; the walled city of Acre ("Accon") is to the left of Jerusalem; and Damascus is at the upper left border. Jerusalem is at the core of the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis and remains perhaps the major obstacle to peace in the Middle East. Jerusalem is of strategic importance to Palestine and it is of sacred importance to Christians and Muslims alike. It connects the northern region of the West Bank to the southern, and it is the hub of the main transportation network of the West Bank.

Jerusalem is a hard city, no doubt. It is a city of conflicts - a microcosm of all of the conflicts that exist in the whole country. Jerusalem is therefore a major site of pilgrimage for all three religions as well as, unfortunately, a place of religion-political tension over this important piece of land. The city is also popular destination for non-religious travelers, thanks to its unmatched historical and spiritual importance, its network of museums and concerts, and the archeological treasures that are continually discovered here

Jerusalem is now a town of some 50,000 inhabitants, with ancient mediaeval walls, partly on the old lines, but extending less far to the south. The traditional sites, as a rule, were first shown in the 4th and later centuries A.D., and have no authority. Jerusalem is Israel's capital but many nations refuse to maintain embassies there, conducting their diplomatic business in Tel Aviv instead. Jerusalem is first mentioned under that name in the Book of Joshua, and the Tell-el-Amarna collection of tablets includes six letters from its Amorite king to Egypt, recording the attack of the Abiri about B.C. The name is there spelt Uru-Salim (city of peace).

Jerusalem is popular tourist destination. Jerusalem is simple in a most sophisticated simplicity, because Jerusalem has passed sophistication. It is a very old city.
